Can you delete an email after sending it?

Short answer: You can delete your own copy, but not the recipient's. Deleting from your sent folder changes nothing on their side. Recall may remove an unread message within the same organisation, but it cannot reach a different provider or an already-downloaded attachment. The document, however, can be made removable.

Two different deletions

  • Your copy: deleting from Sent tidies your mailbox and has no effect on the recipient.
  • Their copy: only a successful recall touches this, and only under narrow conditions.

Why the attachment is the hard part

Even a successful recall does not retrieve a file that was downloaded, forwarded, printed or synced to a phone. Once a file leaves as an attachment, every copy is independent.

Making the document deletable
